Men are also taught that they don't have to step down the slot to begin a pattern; as a follow, I should step forward just because.

It's interesting you bring up Arthur Murray's syllabus and the coaster step because Craig Hutchinson's interviews go into how he was an Arthur Murray instructor and later learned that the written information that syllabus was created from didn't include the critical fact that the coaster step was supposed to include a swivel in it.

So when the coaster step was injected into the masses by A.M. schools, it was taught wrong, and the swivel was all but totally lost. It's only found today by examining films of dancers from the time period before the start of A.M. schools.
