my question is....why do you only play those songs at private parties? I think there is so much more music to dance to out there than what is being used now. Not saying that there isnt ALOT of great music being played at events and swing clubs, BUT, there is so much more "untapped" music that is out there that isnt being played for some strange reason. "Pour some sugar on me" is a great song to swing to....tons of musicality in that song. So why isnt music like that being played more?
Correct me if I am wrong but, didnt Lacey Schwimmer dance to an AC/DC song a couple years back as a routine? I think we need to inject some of these "alternative" songs into the swing world.
And just an FYI to anyone who reads this.....at our last dance here in Cleveland, I played the remix version of "walk this way" with Aerosmith and Run DMC, and the floor was packed with dancers on an evening that was very hot and a studio whos a/c was not working too well.
A routine song doesn't have to be socially danceable. Some of the couples use non-traditional songs for routines. It doesn't necessarily mean that everyone should jump on it and try to social dance to what Benji and Kellese did at Atlanta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9nd0zDox5I).
Breakdown for the rest of the songs:
Afroman - Crazy Rap - too dirty to play anywhere else except very latenight
Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek - it's what Arjay would describe as free style stuff. There is no beat. A lot of the dancers wouldn't know what to even do with this one.
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar on Me - slow and bouncy, not a good combo for beginners
Maroon 5 - Infatuation - unusual/complex beat - beginners would get lost.
Jo Jo - Baby It's You - same as above - this is definitely not for beginners.
Yes, those songs have plenty of musicality, but about 75% of the crowd wouldn't "get" it. The ratio might be higher or lower, depending on where you live.
